Transcript: Single Metric View Tour

Narrator:

Welcome to DataVista, a website and metrics platform for information on California Community Colleges and Adult Education student success; created by the California Community College Chancellor's Office in partnership with WestEd.

This video demonstrates the Single Metric view, enabling a deep dive into one metric at a time. The view has two entry points, one under Data Views in the top navigation, and the second underneath the Quicklinks section.

Select a student group from the Single Metric landing page. You can select between Snapshot and Cohort views

Which view is right for you? Snapshot views look at all data at a specific point in time, generally, for a single academic year. Cohort views track student progress over time for the same group of students. Your selection will determine the metrics and filters available.

Use the expandable filters on your left to manipulate your data. The first filter is Student Type, where you can select from the student groups available on the previous landing page. The next filter is Locale. The default view is statewide, but additional options are also available, like macro- or microregion, district, or college. If you are looking for a certain college, you can limit your search by altering your locale type.

You can also select a locale using the search box. You'll know your selection has been made by the updated title above the graph.

The next filter available is only for cohort student groups. Cohort Length allows you to view outcomes from when students first enrolled. Note that the default length is three years. You'll need to select one year to see all first-year metrics.

Metrics includes all metrics available for your selected student group. Use the search box to quickly find what you are looking for.

Use the drill-down to see demographics or other student characteristics. You can display all members of a category by clicking on the subgroup name. You can also make individual student selections. Hold down the Control key on a PC or the Command key on a Mac to add to your selection by clicking on other groups. Hover over any graph points to reveal more information.

The Single Metric view provides additional options to manipulate your data. In the Options box, you can adjust the years displayed, show or hide labels, adjust the y-axis, show a table of the data, or switch from line graph to bar graph.

The Top 5 selection allows you to view the top colleges meeting a metric outcome by state, macro- or microregion.

The Compare function allows comparisons across journeys, locales, programs, and drilldowns. Tips and guidance on how to make your selections are provided throughout the page.

You can export your selected data to a CSV or PDF. Clicking on the CSV button will take you to your data. Here, you can alter the academic year.

To download all metrics available for your selections, click the CSV button, select your format, then click download. To download a PDF, click on the PDF button. You'll be brought to a snapshot of your PDF; select print. You can alter the properties of the PDF and then select download to download the data visualization.

Lastly, a toolkit surrounds all data views and can be hidden or shown by clicking the Toolkit arrow in the top right corner. Based on the student group you select, different resources with guidance and key terminology will appear in the toolkit.
